"So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. "This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. Make a roof for it and finish the ark to within 18 inches of the top. "Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks." (Genesis 6:14-16) This scripture is the record of the instructions that God had given Noah in order for him to build the Ark according to His design. We now find ourselves exploring a time period where God has just warn Noah that He was going to destroy the earth through a Great Flood of Judgment. This page won't go into the account of Noah and his family, but instead it will point out some things about the Ark itself. To begin with the Ark did in fact ended up being 450 feet long and 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. Okay, so we know this much, just from reading what the scriptures laid out for us up at the top of this page. So let's take a little bit of a closer look. For starters, this great wooden ship had a deck size of about 98,000 feet. This in today's time would be about the size of twenty NBA basketball courts if they were placed together. As for the animals that would inhabit this ship for forty days and nights, their population number would not exceed more than 35,000. Now, with the average size being around what a sheep would be, it would have taken up to 150 railroad freight cars in today's time to be able to have carried that type load. This wasn't a problem for the Ark being that it had a carrying capacity of over 520 railroad freight cars. Being about 1/3 the length of the Oasis of the Seas (1,187 ft) which at the time of this posting, is currently the world's largest passenger cruise ship which can hold up to 5,400 passengers. The Ark would remained the largest built ship in world during this Biblical time period. In fact, it would hold this record until the ship called the SS Great Eastern would come along in the year 1858. The SS Great Eastern was an iron steamship that was 690 feet long and could hold up to 4,000 passengers. There have been plenty of reports that have statements from people claiming to have seen the Ark. Although no evidence has been found that would prove these reports to be factual. So they say? But there have been reports of people that have actually seen the Ark. All the reports indicate that the Ark was sighted at the top of Mt. Ararat. This mountain is the tallest peak that's located in Turkey. Reports have been made from American and Russian pilots during World War II. There was also a claim that was made by a French Explorer who goes by the name of Bernard Navarra. He was able to cut a piece of wood from the Ark and had it submitted for C-14 testing at two universities. The University of Bordeaux was able to conclude that the piece of wood of was of great antiquity. The other university which was the Forest Institute in Madrid which also concluded that the piece of wood would be about 5000 years old. Navarra did write a book about his somewhat discovery of the Ark. The name of his book is called, 'Noah's Ark, I Touched It.' There was another report that came from George Jefferson Greene. While doing research for the company that he had worked for, he sighted the Ark from the helicopter he was riding in. He was about 90 feet above Mt. Ararat in the year of 1953. Greene was able to take numerous pictures of the very large and strange looking wooden object. Greene had these pictures developed and many people had the privilege to be able to see them.
