Nimrod the Son of Cush

A Mighty One in the Earth

(Genesis 10: 8-10)

A Mighty Hunter?

Since I went ahead and decided to do the page that takes a peak at "The Table of Nations."

It would also be wise to do a page concerning Nimrod the son of Cush, who was the grandson of Ham and great grandson of Noah.

"He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, 'Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.'" (Genesis 10: 9)

The Bible confirms the great reputation that Nimrod had earned.

Being a great hunter at a time when the beasts of the field were in great abundance and civilization had not yet solidified its self at that time.

With Nimrod being able to be a major contributor when it came to keeping the wild beast from overwhelming his kingdom, we find that Nimrod had found great respect amongst his people.

A Different Breed

We should also note, that Nimrod was a different kind of man when it came to the others? He wasn't content with just running the tribe that he had before him, he wanted more.

So he started to surround and build himself a fighting band of loyal men. He used these men to invade his neighbors as well as to execute judgment and punishment against the innocent.

In God's Eyes

Nimrod had thought of himself as a mighty prince, just like Alexander the Great and Caesar did sometime later on in history.

But in God's eyes it did not matter how many personal accomplishment he would be able to achieve, because to God - he was just a mighty hunter.

And why not, he did not do things that would please God? He did not follow the ways of the Lord while he was establishing his new kingdoms and governments.

Daring God

He would also institute a pagan religion within these kingdoms that he had built, just like Jeroboam would do sometime later during his reign as the first Northern Israel king.

Nimrod would taunt God with his defiance and dare the Lord to do something as he oppress and tortured others - what pride that this man had.

The Bible lets us know that at the beginning of his reign he named his first kingdom Babel. This is important information, for it sheds some light on the events that were to take place sometime later.

Knowing that Nimrod was indeed a great builder and the name in which he named his first kingdom (Babel), along with the time his reign had taken place -- we are lead to believe that Nimrod was perhaps the master mind behind the infamous, "Tower of Babel."

Completing the Tower of Babel - Would Had Made Noah a False Prophet

But if this was the case and the "Tower of Babel," was allowed to be finished and stand for any amount of time. This would have gone against Noah's prophecy that he had foretold against his son Ham.

Understanding that Nimrod was a direct descendant of Ham, and if the "Tower of Babel," placed all nations under one ruler. This would have made Noah a false prophet, for Nimrod would have ruled over all of Noah's sons.

This would not and could not have happen, for Noah had cursed Canaan to be a "servant of servants," this means that Canaan cannot rule over any of Noah's sons. For it was Canaan and his sons that would serve his brothers now and in future generations as well.

And since Canaan was Ham's son in which Nimrod was a direct descendant of, he would fall under this same curse or rule that his father Canaan was under.

God's Word Reign's True!

You must know and understand that God's word reigns out in absolute truth! This is part of the reason why we would latter learn that God had destroyed this "Tower of Babel," before it was finished, and confused the languages of all the nations, which caused all civilizations to remain divided.

But to Nimrod's credit? He did established at this time four cities under his reign which were called - Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh which were all located in ,"The Land of Shinar."

And soon afterwards he would head into Assyria, where we are now told that he also had built Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth Ir, Calab and Resen which was located between Nineveh and Calah.
