Abram & Lot
Family Drama Builds
Know that Lot was pleased at what he'd saw, for the land was well watered, just like the "garden of the Lord" (Garden of Eden) had once been.

God's Provision
In the last article, we learned that Abram and his family had been forced to leave Egypt after an angry Pharaoh discovered that Sarai was Abram's wife, not his sister. Now, we're not exactly sure how Pharaoh found this. Still, we do know that his household would be severely afflicted with plagues as a result of his actions regarding Abram and Sarai.
Remember that Abram initially went down to Egypt with the hope of finding provisions and relief from the severe famine ravaging the land of Canaan at that time. However, that may have been; we now see that Abram was on his way back to the land of Canaan (a place he should never have left to begin with).
I would also like to point out that Abram was very fortunate to have his wife Sarai still, for he'd almost lost her to Pharaoh and the Egyptians. But know that God will never break His promise to those who are found to be in His covenant.
And because of this favor that Abram had with the Lord, God had made sure that Abram was protected and provided for, even though he was found to be off the path that God had originally placed him on. God had blessed Abram so much that he ended up leaving Egypt, not just with his marriage still intact, but the Lord had also made Abram and the rest of his family very wealthy. This is why Abram's nephew Lot would also benefit from the covenant that God had made with his uncle Abram, for he, too, had become a very wealthy man.

Bethel - The House of God
However, as we move forward, the Sacred Record reveals that after Abram had traveled from place to place, we're told that he would now find himself back near the town of Bethel, for it was the place that he'd previously made an altar unto the Lord at, when he had first entered Canaan. Now, the name Bethel means "house of God," and this would be the place where Abram would call on the name of the Lord.
Now we're not told what Abram and God had discussed, but keep in mind that Abram had just been through a lot, and he knew that it was the favor God had on his life that allowed him to make it through his Egyptian ordeal very nicely. So we can only assume up to this point that Abram was thanking the Almighty God for all that he had done and continued to do for him.

Quarreling Amongst Relatives
Now, in the meantime, we find that Abram and Lot's herders weren't getting along, and strife had started building between the two camps. Understand that up to this point, Canaan was a land that could provide for both camps. But since they had not yet taken full possession of the land away from the Canaanites, they weren't able to enjoy all that the land could have provided for them. As the growth of each camp continued to increase, the available space for settlement remained minimal.
And because of this, Abram would end up telling Lot to pick his own choice of land. And Abram had done this to avoid further strife developing between the two camps:
"So Abram said to Lot, 'Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers. Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left.'" - Genesis 13:8,9

Lot Choose Jordan
So Lot agreed with Abram's proposal, and he began surveying the entire plain of Jordan. And it's at this moment that Lot saw the river Jordan, for it had divided itself into a bunch of little streams. Know that Lot was pleased at what he'd seen, for the land was well watered, just like the "garden of the Lord" (Garden of Eden) had once been.
And because of this, Lot had decided to choose the "plain of Jordan," and he headed east towards it, as he parted ways with his uncle Abram and his camp. Now, after Lot had settled in the "plains of Jordan," which was located near the city of Sodom, it is at this time that the Sacred Record reveals to us that the men of the city of Sodom were wicked and very sinful in the eyes of the Lord.

God Speaks to Abram
However, in the meantime, we now find that the Lord had spoken to Abram: "The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, 'Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever." - Genesis 13:14,15
So Abram did as he was told, and he dwelt in the "plain of Mamre," which was located in the city of Hebron. And it's at this point that we're told that Abram had built another altar unto the One True God.
In the next Bible Study Online Article:
Okay, now that we find that Abram and his family had went back to Canaan, after they were kicked out of Egypt. We learned that Abram and Lot's camps had a big fallen out, so-much-so, Abram and Lot ended up parting ways. But now we find that a rebellion was rising up near the city of Sodom. Now how would this affect Lot, being that he'd had now settled near the city of Sodom?
