The Daughters of Lot

Their Selfish & Wicked Plan

The older daughter had a son and she named him Moab which means (of my father), who would eventually become the father of the Moabites. The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi which means (the son of my people), in which he would eventually become the father of the Ammonites.

(Bible Study Online Article Covers : Genesis 19:30-38)

Short Recap

In the last couple of articles we'd learned, that God had decided to send three angels down, in order to do -- what I like to call "a sin report" on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. For the Sacred Record revealed, that the outcry that was coming from the two cities, was so great -- that the Lord had to come from out of the heavens to investigate the matter for Himself.

"Then the Lord said, 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous, that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.'" -- Genesis 18:21

Now keep in mind, that when it comes to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah?

Is that we generally hear about there being two angels, instead of three, but know that initially -- the Lord did send three.

But one of the other angels had stay back, in order to listen and answer Abraham, as he'd pleaded for the two wicked cities.

As For Abraham?

And as for Abraham? Know that before the three angels would go to Sodom and Gomorrah, in order to enact God's wrath, keep in mind that they had another mission that they had to do first? For it was during this time, that the three angels, would end up delivering a prophecy to Abraham -- that dealt with his wife Sarah. For they told Abraham, that his wife would have a child by that time, next year.

And Sarah?

And Sarah would overhear the angels telling her husband, about how she will conceive a child in about a year's time. And because of this, she would begin to laugh to herself, for she doubted the prophecy that the angels had delivered.

But God would hear Sarah laughing, and although she did not laugh out loud, the Lord still called Sarah out -- when it came to her skepticism. And make no mistake, this moment, would be what I like to call "a challenge test" when it came to Sarah's faith. For we find, that God would not punish Sarah for doubting Him, but instead -- God would again, confirm boldly, that she will bear a child by that time next year.

Abraham's Prayer Request

Then as we'd fast-forward a bit in our journey, we would find ourselves at a time, when the angels would then turn their attention towards the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Now the Sacred Record had confirmed, that Abraham was following along, behind the three angels. And it's at that time, one of the angels, would then tell Abraham -- about His plans, when it came to the two cities.

And after Abraham had heard what God was planning to do, he pleaded for the Lord to spare the two cities, if He could find at least ten righteous people who lived in the cities. And somewhat surprisingly, God would agree to Abraham's proposal. But unfortunately for these two cities, God would not find the ten righteous people, that He had agreed to spare the cites for, and so therefore -- Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed.

And in spite of this, Abraham's prayer request for the righteous would still be answered, although the two cities were still destroyed. For we find that the beneficiaries of this prayer request, would be Abraham's nephew Lot, and his two daughters and his wife.

The Town of Zoar?

So we'd fast-forward a bit more, and this is where we would find the angels, telling Lot, to head toward the mountains for safety -- for the Lord was going to destroy the city. But Lot did not want to make the long journey, so he pleaded with the angels, by asking if he could flee to the small neighboring town of Zoar -- for safety instead?

And since the Sacred Record had revealed that "God's judgment of wrath" could not begin until Lot was safe, the angels would grant the request. And it's because of this request by Lot, that the small town, that was known as "Zoar" -- was also spared.

Now we find that Lot, his wife, and their two daughters would begin to flee to the city of Zoar -- but it at this time, that we find that Lot's wife, would disobey God -- by looking back at the destruction of the two cities. And as soon as she would lay her eyes upon the wrath of God, she was immediately, turned into a pillar of salt.

Zoar Just As Wicked -- As Sodom & Gomorrah?

However that might have been, we find that God had just finished judging Sodom and Gomorrah, for the two cities were no more. And Lot and his two daughters, had indeed made it to the city of Zoar. But now, it's at this time, that we find that Lot and his daughters would end up leaving the small town of Zoar -- for the Sacred Record would reveal, that Lot was afraid to stay there.

And although the Sacred Record doesn't give a more specific reason on why Lot left, after being there for a such short time -- we can only assume, that the city of Zoar was just as sinful and wicked as the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. And it's likely for this reason, that had caused Lot to assume, that it's very well possible -- that God was going to destroy the town of Zoar as well?

Zoar Was Spared -- Because of Lot?

But as I stated earlier, the only reason why the town of Zoar, was spared in the first place -- dealt with the fact, that Lot had requested to go there. For we must remember, that Lot did not want to go to the mountains, that God had wanted him to go to initially. But now we discover, that shortly after, we now find -- that Lot and his two daughters, would still end up going to the mountains anyway, after they had learned that Zoar was just as wicked as Sodom and Gomorrah.

My Oh My! - The Fall of Lot?

Now keep in mind, that there was a time, that Lot was once a very wealthy and proud man -- when he'd followed behind his uncle Abraham. But now we find him, and his family, apart from God and living in a cave. Now I wonder if Lot had thought about all the mistakes that he had made, the very mistakes, that led to him losing everything he once took pride in?

For you must understand, that this is a man who had been tremendously blessed, because of his relationship with his uncle Abraham. For Lot had acquired great wealth and respect, and because of his pride, he would soon have a fallen out with Abraham. And this family strife, would cause a division between the two family camps (Abraham's and Lot's), for it would lead to the two -- eventually splitting from one another.

Lot Should Have Humbled Himself?

So instead of Lot humbling himself, and taking control of his family drama, he decides to depart away from Abraham -- into the plains of Jordan (Sodom) and make a new home there. Know that sometime would pass, and the Sacred Record would confirm, that Lot would now find himself -- being taken as a prisoner of war. And because of Lot's new ordeal, Abraham would eventually hear about it.

And after Abraham had heard about Lot's unfortunate situation, he'd planned and went out on a battle mission, in order to get his nephew from out of harms way. And fortunately for Lot, Abraham's rescue campaign, turned out to be very successful. And there are times that I wonder, why Lot at this time, didn't make amends with Abraham? For he could have easily shown some wisdom, and commonsense, by going back under Abraham's leadership?

Abraham Saving Lot Again?

But Lot would not do this in spite of his recent dilemma. So what did he do instead? He ended up choosing to go back and live in Sodom again. And because of this awful mistake, Abraham would once again, have to come to his nephew's rescue. But this time around, it would be done through intercession and reasoning with God, and not by the means of natural warfare. And Lot would once again, have the opportunity to go back to Abraham's household, but what does he do instead? Lot doesn't humble himself, and he decides to live the rest of his life in a cave.

The Daughters of Lot?

Now to show just how far Lot had fallen, the Sacred Record would confirm to us, that his daughters had decided to come up with a plan -- that would help to preserve their family line. So we find the older daughter telling her younger sister: "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father." -- Genesis 19:31,32

So that night, they got their father Lot, to drink wine until he became extremely drunk. And his older daughter, would then lay with him. Now understand that Lot was so drunk, that he wasn't aware that it was his older daughter that he had just laid with. For the Sacred Record confirms, that Lot wasn't aware -- when she lay down, or when she got up: "That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up." -- Genesis 19:33

Lot's Daughters -- Repeated The Wicked Process?

Now the two daughters would again, repeat this plan the very next night: "Last night I lay with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father," the older daughter would say to her younger sister.

So just like the night before, they would get their father Lot drunk, and his younger daughter would then lay with him. And once again, the Sacred Record confirms that Lot was not aware -- when she lay down, or when she got up: "So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he [Lot] was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up." -- Genesis 19:35

Israel's Enemies - Ammonites & Moabites - Are Born?

So it would seem that Lot's daughters plan, when it came to getting pregnant, would turn out to be successful -- for they both would end up getting pregnant by their father. And because of this, the older daughter ended up having a son, and she named him Moab -- which means (of my father). For he would eventually become the father of the Moabites.

As for the younger daughter, she also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi -- which means (the son of my people). And this child, would eventually become the father of the Ammonites. Understand that the Sacred Record would later confirm, that the Moabites, and the Ammonites -- would become hostile, and bitter neighboring enemies of Abraham's seed, which would be known later as "Israel" :

"After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them." -- (1 Samuel 14:47)

Lot's Household -- Paid a High Price?

You know, one of the things that I personally find that's great about the Sacred Record, is that it doesn't try to hide the flaws of the people that are recorded from within it's Sacred Covers. For this horrible and degrading act, that had happen between Lot, and his daughters -- was a very sad and sinful moment in their family history.

And even though, Lot's daughters had tried to justify their actions, by claiming that they were trying to preserve their father's seed. But what they ended up doing instead, is separating their father's seed even more so, away from God and Abraham -- by destroying any chance, that Lot descendants would have had, when it came to the "promise covenant" that God had made with Abraham and his seed.

However this may have been, we would never know, exactly what had happen to Lot -- after the huge sinful mistakes that he had made with his daughters. But as for Lot himself, from this point forward, he would never again be mentioned from within the Sacred Record.

In the next Bible Study Online Article:

Well now that we have learned what happened to Lot and his daughters after they had made it to the town of Zoar. We'd also discovered their horrible, and disgracing fate. But however, we must move forward, and in the next article our attention will now turn back towards Abraham. And what's this I see? Is Abraham once again, having problems with another powerful king?

May God blessings be upon you, and thank you for your support
