Short Recap - Two Angels
God had sent two angels to go down and do a sin report on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. The outcry that came from these two cities was so great, that the Lord had to come from out of the heavens to investigate the matter for Himself. But before the angels would reach Sodom and Gomorrah, they had another mission that they had to do? At this time it was three angels instead of two, and they would deliver a message to Abraham about his wife Sarah. The three angels told Abraham that his wife would have a child by this time next year.
Bible Study Online Short Recap - Sarah's Doubt
Sarah would overhear the angels telling her husband about how she will conceive a child in about a year's time. She would then begin to laugh to herself, and doubted God's word. God would hear Sarah laughing although she did not laugh out loud. The Lord would call Sarah out on her skepticism, but He would not punish her for it. Instead, God would again confirm boldly that she will bear a child by this time next year.
Bible Study Online Short Recap - Abraham's Prayer
The angels would turn their attention towards Sodom and Gomorrah, while Abraham had follow behind them. God would then tell Abraham about his plans concerning the two cities. After Abraham had heard what God was planning to do he pleaded for God to spare the two cities if He could find ten righteous, and God would agree to this proposal. But God did not find ten righteous in the city so therefore Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed. But Abraham's prayer would still be answered although the two cities were still destroyed? His nephew Lot and his family would be spared because of Abraham's prayer.
Bible Study Online Short Recap - What About the City of Zoar?
The two angels would tell Lot to head the mountains for safety. But Lot did not want to make the long journey, so he pleaded with the two angels if he could flee to the city of Zoar for safety? The two angels would grant to request, so therefore the city of Zoar was spared because of Lot. Now we find that Lot, his wife and their two daughters would flee to the city of Zoar, but Lot's wife would disobey God and look back at the destruction of the two cities. As soon as she would lay her eyes upon the wrath of God, she immediately was turned into a pillar of salt.
Bible Study Online Zoar Was Wicked Also?
God had just finished judging Sodom and Gomorrah and the two cities were no more. Lot and his two daughters had indeed made it to the city of Zoar. But now we find that the three would end up leaving the small city, for Lot was afraid to stay there. Although the Bible doesn't give a more specific reason on why he left after being there for a short time, we can only assume that it was because the city of Zoar was just as sinful as the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. This is why God was going to destroy the city of Zoar as well, but as I stated above, the city was spared because of Lot request to go there. Lot did not want to go to the mountains that God had wanted him to go to initially. But now we find that Lot and his two daughters would still end up going to the mountains, after they had experience the sinfulness of Zoar.
Bible Study Online How Did Lot Get to this Point?
Now Lot who was once a wealthy and proud man, we now find him and his family living in a cave. I wonder if Lot thought about all the mistakes that he had made, that lead to him losing everything he once took pride in. This is a man who had been tremendously blessed because of his relationship with his uncle Abraham. Lot had acquired great wealth, but he would soon have a fallen out with Abraham shortly after, which would cause their two family camps to split from one another. Lot would choose the plains of Jordan (Sodom) for his new home. A while later he would find himself being taken as a prisoner of war. Abraham would then go on a battle mission to get his nephew back, which turned out to be successful. Lot at this time could have made amends with Abraham and perhaps show some wisdom by going back under Abraham's household. But Lot would not do this, but instead he would choose to live in Sodom again. So now we find that Abraham would once again come to his nephew rescue, but this time it would be through intercession. Lot would once again have the opportunity to go back to Abraham household, but instead he doesn't humble himself and decides to live in a cave.
Bible Study Online Lot's Daughters?
Now his daughters decide to come up with a plan that would help to preserve their family line: "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father," the older daughter would say to her younger sister. So that night, they got their father Lot to drink wine until he became extremely drunk. His older daughter would then lay with him. Lot was so drunk, that he wasn't aware that it was his older daughter that he had just laid with. The Bible states that he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. Now the two daughters would again repeat this plan the very next night: "Last night I lay with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father," the older daughter would say to her younger sister. So just like before they would get their father Lot drunk, and his younger daughter would then lay with him. Once again the Bible states that he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
Bible Study Online Two Sons or Grandsons?
So both daughters would end up getting pregnant by their father Lot. The older daughter had a son and she named him Moab which means (of my father), who would eventually become the father of the Moabites. The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi which means (the son of my people), in which he would eventually become the father of the Ammonites. We would later learn that the Moabites and the Ammonites would become hostile bitter neighboring enemies of Abraham descendant's. "After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them." (1 Samuel 14:47) We would never know what had happen to Lot after the huge sinful mistakes that he had made with his daughters. But as for Lot himself, he would never again be mentioned in the Bible from this point forward.
