Abraham

His Last Years

He reached a good old age, and became an elder man who was full of years before he breathed his last breath

(Bible Study Online Article Covers : Genesis 25:1-11)

Short Recap?

In the last article we'd discovered, that Rebekah's family had tried to do some last minute haggling, when it came to keeping Rebekah at home for another ten months. But Eliezer would insist, that they would leave immediately. So Rebekah's family decided to ask her, what she wanted to do.

And she responded, by telling them, that she wanted to leave with Eliezer.

So Rebekah's family, would honor her wishes, by allowing her to go back with Eliezer.

Now as we move forward, we find that Eliezer was finally able to bring Rebekah back home with him, in order for her to meet Isaac.

And needless-to-say -- Isaac and Rebekah would finally meet, and soon after, they were married. And make no mistake -- this was able to happen, because of Eliezer's obedience, and dedication towards Abraham. And of course, Eliezer's success (when it came to his "wife finding mission"), came from him being able to benefit from the favor of the Lord.

However that may have been, Abraham was happy to finally be able to see his son Isaac get married. Know that this would be a great moment from within Abraham's life? Being that the great patriarch, would be able to see his son Isaac, marry a young lady who went by the name of Rebekah -- who'd came from his homeland of Mesopotamia.

The Six Sons of Keturah?

Still, we now move forward a little bit more... and it would be at this time, that the Sacred Record would reveal -- that Abraham would find himself another wife, who went by the name Keturah. Now it's presumed, that Keturah, was perhaps -- one of the maidservants that had already lived from within Abraham's household.

Nevertheless, we find that the Sacred Record reveals, that Abraham would have six more children with his new wife Keturah. Now keep in mind, when it comes to these children, know that their names would be: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian (father of the Midianites), Ishbak and Shuah. Understand that these sons of Abraham, would eventually become the forefathers of various different civilizations, that had dwelt in the areas of Arabia and Syria.

Putting Things In Order?

Now it's at this point, that we're reminded -- that as Abraham enters into his last years, he begins to get things into official order, when it comes to his estate and family. And just like one would expect, we find -- that Abraham would officially make Isaac, the heir to his entire household. But keep in mind, when it came to his sons that he had with is other wives (Hagar and Keturah)? He simply gave them valuable gifts, and sent them to the eastward lands of Arabia, and Asia the Greater. Know that Abraham would do this for good reasons?

For starters, it would separate Isaac from the rest of his sons, as he'd placed their households far away from him. Understand that this separation, would indeed be necessary? Also know, that it had to be done -- for we must remember, that God had placed a "divine promise" on Isaac.

Also know that the reasons why I'm making such a statement, deals with the fact, that out of all the children that were born unto Abraham, Isaac was the only one that was conceived within God's perfect will: "Yes, but your wife will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him." -- (Genesis 17: 19)

However, They Too -- Will Become Great Nations?

Now keep in mind, that this doesn't mean that Abraham's other children weren't blessed themselves? For you must know, that they were indeed, blessed -- and in a great way: "And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him: I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation." -- (Genesis 17: 20)

However that may have been, we must also keep in mind, that although Isaac's brothers would become great nations as well -- for it would be from within Isaac's genealogy, that the "Abrahamic Covenant" would be sustained, and most importantly -- it would be through Isaac's linage, that the true Messiah (Jesus [Yeshua] Christ) -- would eventually come from.

Abraham's Last Days?

Nonetheless, our journey has now brought us to the last days of Abraham. For we find, that the Sacred Record informs us, that Abraham was now 175 years old. Understand that the great patriarch, had reached a good old age -- for he was found to be an elder man, who was now full of years, before he'd breathed his last breath. Also know, that Abraham died 38 years, after the death of his first wife Sarah.

And it would be at this time, that Abraham's body would be gathered amongst his people. And it's also at this time, where we now find -- that his sons Isaac and Ishmael, had finally put aside their differences, being that this was a moment of great importance. For we find that Isaac and Ishmael, had buried their father in the cave called Machpelah, which was located near Mamre. Also know, that Abraham would be buried along side his first wife Sarah -- whose grave, was also inside the cave of Machpelah -- which is now known to this very day, as "The Tomb of the Patriarchs."

"[Abraham's] sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah." -- Genesis 25:9,10

In the next Bible Study Online Article:

Now that we find that Abraham had married again, and his new wife had bored him six more sons. We'd learned that all of his children would be blessed by God. But it would be Isaac, that God's "promise covenant" would remain with. Now we find, that Abraham had finally been laid to rest. However, in the next article, we'll take a closer look at the "The Twelve Tribes of Ishmael." Ishmael? Yeah that's right... Ishmael?

May God blessings be upon you, and thank you for your support
